The Tunisian presidency announced that President Qais Sadiqi has issued a presidential pardon to Wathiq al-Jariah, the former head of the country's football federation. The pardon was in celebration of Tunisia’s 69th Republic Day.
List of prisoners released
The presidency also mentioned that al-Jariah is among those who benefited from the presidential amnesty which affected 2439 prisoners and 490 others on conditional release as well.
Previous Disputes
Al-Jariah was arrested last December involving a professional misconduct case. He denies these accusations, considering them false claims against him. There were previous disputes between al-Jariah and the former Minister of Youth and Sports Khaled Djeche, who accused the Tunisian football system of corruption, while al-Jariah refuted those accusations and considered them an attack on the federation.
Background and Re-election
Al-Jariah has held the position of president since 2012. He was re-elected multiple times. Additionally, he has served as a member in various committees affiliated with both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA.
